Entering 2011, many of us will start the year going to work in a new position, a new company, or even going down a whole new career path.  Whether we are moving to a new part of town, or a new state to begin this journey, beginning a new career can be scary.  But how do you get your foot in the door with no experience?  Whether you are a fresh college graduate beginning your career, or an individual choosing a whole new career path, it can be difficult to prove to employers you are the right candidate.  Most companies want to hire Employees with experience, but how do you gain the experience if no one will hire you without it!!  Although it may prove difficult getting in, it is not impossible!  Here are a few tips to help get your foot in the door:

1.        Examine your strengths from your last job that can transfer to this new opportunity.  Although you may lack the experience or knowledge in the current field into which you would like to begin this new career, this does not mean you will be dismissed as a candidate.  More often than not, companies like to train their Employees to do the job their way.  This can be learned, and does not require you to have worked in the field before.  Leadership skills, motivation, drive, ambition, integrity cannot be instilled by an employer.  However, product knowledge, systems, and technical skills can all be taught.  Explain what your core competencies are and how they paved the way to success you accomplished in your last job, and how they can transfer to the new position.

2.       Show your dedication to the new company, and your desire to make this new position yours.  If moving to a new company, read up on the company’s mission statement and their visions.  Find out current topics regarding that company.  Attending professional conferences, speaking with people associated in that field, as well as constantly reading up on information in the related field will show that you have the knowledge and are dedicated to making this position yours.

3.       Creating a professional resume is extremely important, especially with a lack of experience.  In this resume, you want to highlight your skills and abilities that will demonstrate what you can offer the company.  If you are lacking experience in the desired industry, point out your professional skills that ALL companies are interested in such as time management, drive, leadership skills, professionalism, and loyalty.  Highlighting how these universal skills will relate to the job desired will show that you may qualify as a good fit for the position.

4.       sell YOURSELF!  Let’s face it; we all love to talk about ourselves!  So why do we find it so difficult to talk about what it is we do well in an interview?  The only way to overcome this is to be confident in our answers.  Make a list of what it is you will bring to the table at this new position.  Practice selling yourself to a friend, family member, roommate, or significant other.  Confidence is a key factor, if you don’t believe it, an employer surely won’t.  Lying about skillsets, talents, or competencies will not bring you confidence so find out exactly what it is you will bring to this new position and how it aligns with the company’s policy’s and plans for the future.

With these tips, along with a positive, energetic attitude, there should be no problem nailing your interview in your new field.  With the right attitude and ability to highlight your skillsets, landing a position in ANY industry should never be an issue.  After all, the knowledge and tricks of the trade can be learned, but demonstrating a drive for success and leadership skills is what companies are looking for!  Here is to a successful 2011!!
