A Growing Indiana
When the US Census Bureau released new data this past Thursday, Indiana was a hot topic! Over the last several years, Indiana’s population growth has been attributed to an increase in suburban living, and growth in the Hispanic population. This year has been no different; Indiana is continuously proving to be a growing state with 6.6 percent growth rate over the last ten years. While Indiana is growing, some of the state’s larger cities are showing the opposite. South Bend, Gary, Hammond, and Evansville all showed significant decrease in their population this year. Indianapolis however was no surprise with its population rising from 860,000 ten years ago to 903,000 last year. The surrounding areas of Indy topped the charts as well. Noblesville, Fishers, and Carmel grew significantly standing on top as the three fastest growing communities in our state. Indy’s eight county metro areas accounted for a whopping 57% of the entire state’s population increase.
-Noblesville grew from 29th largest city in the state to 14th
-Fishers moved from 18th largest to 9th
-Carmel grew from 19th to 8th
So what contributed to this suburban boom in Indianapolis? A number of factors play a role when determining where people are moving in and out of. Schools, parks, crime rate, jobs, and housing affordability all contribute to making that home buying decision in any state. With the diversity Indianapolis cities have to offer with the high quality of life, it is no surprise that we continue to grow. People want to live in a place that has a lot to offer, and Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, and Indianapolis do just that!
